On Sept. 7th, the Kansas Jayhawks football team will kick off the 2013-14 season in a match-up with South Dakota at Lawrence. The game begins at 6:00 p.m. central time.
South Dakota finished the 2012-13 season with a record of 1-10. The team’s lone victory came on Sept. 8th vs Colgate in a 31-21 win. South Dakota faced one FBS opponent all season in Northwestern. The Coyotes last this encounter, 38-7 on Sept. 22nd.
Josh Vander Maten returns as the Coyotes starting quarterback. Last season as a freshman, Vander Maten threw for 1662 yards and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for 495 yards, second on the team. The quarterback threw seven interceptions.
Senior running back Marcus Sims returns as the team’s top back. Sims rushed for 586 yards and scored four touchdowns. Will Powell and Terrance Perry double as the team’s top receivers. Powell made 55 receptions for 625 yards and Perry added 53 catches for 567 yards.
Defensively, the Coyotes junior cornerback Deven Taverna made three interceptions last year, tops on the team. Charlie Goro added two picks.
Senior linebacker Tim Marlette led the team with 85 tackles, while Taverna added 79. Aaron Swift added 74 tackles. Junior linebacker Tyler Starr led the team with four sacks to go with 74 tackles.
South Dakota faces UC Davis on August, 31st in the team’s season opener. Kansas is the team’s lone division I FBS opponent.
