We are less then a month away from the Kansas women’s soccer team from taking the field for the first time. Last season, the Jayhawks enjoyed some success in finishing with a record of 16-11-3 overall.
The team kicks off the season on August 18th in an exhibition game vs Nebraska-Omaha. Following the exhibition contest, Kansas takes on Arkansas on August 23rd. Big 12 conference play begins on Oct. 4th in a game vs Iowa State.
Last season’s freshman star Ashley Williams returns to lead the team. Williams scored eight goals to go with two assists last season. She was third in the team in total points scored behind Carolina Kastor and Whitney Berry, players who both graduated last season. Jamie Fletcher also returns as a top player up front for Kansas. She scored three goals to go with six assists.
Kaitlyn Stroud takes over full time after sharing time with Kat Liebetrau last year, as the goalie after playing in nine contests last year, and starting seven. Stroud was named the team’s most improved player last season, and named the Big 12 conference’s defensive player of the week on one occasion. She finished with a record of 3-4 overall, and a 1.20 goals against average, the eighth-best by a Jayhawk goalie in school history.
Eight freshmen enter the fold for Kansas this season, including French National team member defender Aurelie Gagnet. Freshman midfielder Tayler Estrada was the three-time player of the year for Arkansas.
Kansas has the talent to continue to improve upon last season’s progress, with Williams and Stroud returning as strong leaders. Estrada and Gagnet will add more talent to the team as aspire to take first place in the conference.
