Incoming basketball freshman Andrew Wiggins was named the Gatorade high school athlete of the year on Tuesday night. The award goes to the top male athlete of the year in high school.
Morgan Andrews was named the female Gatorade player of the year. Andrews, is a women’s soccer player from New Hampshire.
Wiggins, earned the male honors. The guard averaged a double-double in only 25 minutes per game. Wiggins, from Toronto has been on the Canadian junior team, leading the squad to bronze medal finishes two times. He averaged 15 points and eight rebounds per contest for the junior team.
The guard averaged 23 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots for Huntington St. Joes Prep in West Virginia. Wiggins led his team to a 30-3 record overall, and a top 10 finish in the USA Today.
The Gatorade award was established in 2003 and annually honors the top high school athlete for both men’s and women’s brand sports.
Wiggins, Andrews and all other nominees for the award will be present at the ESPY awards. The show begins tonight on ESPN at 8 p.m. central time.
