Kansas Jayhawks linebacker Ben Heeny was named to the Lombardi Watch list on Monday. The junior defensive player is the team’s top returning tackler.
Last season, Heeny racked up 112 tackles in his first season as a starter for the Jayhawks. 66 of these tackles were made solo. Heeny led the team with 12 tackles for loss, and added one sack plus two pass-breakups.
Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. The candidates earned a place on the preliminary watch list by earning All-American honors, being named to their respective all-conference teams or receiving 2013 preseason honors. The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List will be updated prior to the start of the 2013 season in order to identify other players who have received significant preseason honors.
Jadevon Clowney from South Carolina figures to be a favorite for the award right now along with Michigan tackle Taylor Lewan, and Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews.
Fall camp begins on August 7th for the Jayhawks in preparation for the season opener on Sept. 7th vs South Dakota.
