Former Kansas Jayhawks offensive lineman Tanner Hawkinson, was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of yesterday’s NFL Draft. Hawkinson, became the first Jayhawk to be drafted since 2010. Hawkinson, was picked with the 23rd pick of the round and 156th overall.
Last season as a senior, Hawkinson picked up All-Big 12 Second team honors from the conference’s coaches. He was also named to the second team for the Associated Press, Phil Steele Magazine and San Antonio Express News. Hawkinson, finished his career as a Jayhawk, having started in every game, a school-record 48 straight games.
Hawkinson, joins former Kansas Jayhawk lineman Anthony Collins, who is a member of the team.
Other Jayhawks who signed free agent deals yesterday include: Bradley McDougald who signed with Kansas City. McDougald, had a great senior season for Kansas, yet didn’t get picked in the draft, which was a surprise.
Greg Brown signed with San Diego. The cornerback will look to stick with the Chargers.
Toben Operrum signed with Kansas City as did Dayne Crist. Operrum, figures to change sides of the ball in the NFL, and move to a fullback position from the defensive line.
Trevor Marrongeli is likely headed to Detroit, while Tunde Bakare is headed for the Chicago Bears training camp.
