The Kansas Lady Jayhawks advanced to the second round of the Big 12 women’s tournament after beating TCU, 83-61 in Dallas.
The seventh-seeded Jayhawks were led by senior guard Angel Goodrich, who scored 16 points, to go along with five rebounds, eight assists,two blocked shots and two steals. Kansas improved to 18-12 overall on the season, while TCU dropped to 9-21. The Horned Frogs were led by Zahna Medley, who scored 21 points. Veja Hamilton, added 14 points. Kansas forward Chelsea Gardner added 11 points and 19 rebounds. Carolyn Davis scored 12 points to go with nine rebounds for the Jayhawks.
Kansas with the win faces second-seed Iowa State on Saturday in the conference quarterfinals. Iowa State finished the season with a 21-7 record overall and 12-6 mark in conference. The two teams split their season series with the Jayhawks winning in Lawrence on Jan. 30th, 78-75 in overtime, while Iowa State upended Kansas, 83-68 on Feb. 27th.
The Lady Jayhawks grabbed control of the game in the early going, jumping on the Horned Frogs with a 12-4 lead with just over four minutes elapsed from the clock. Kansas stayed in control throughout the rest of the half, entering the locker-room with an 40-30 lead. Kansas opened the second stanza with a 16-7 run, thanks to timely shooting. Charlicia Harper put the Lady Jayhawks ahead, at 56-37. TCU managed to cut the lead to 13 before Kansas once again thanks to Goodrich leading the way, pushed the margin to 21 with over six minutes left. Kansas then cruised the rest of the way.
