On Saturday afternoon in Waco, Texas, the Baylor Bears got a huge win over fourth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks, 81-58. Baylor senior guard Pierre Jackson, led the way on senior night with 28 points, 10 assists and six rebounds.
With the win, Baylor improved to 18-13 overall and 9-9 in conference. Kansas fell to 26-5 and 14-4 in conference. The Jayhawks finished in a tie with Kansas State for first place in the Big 12, though Kansas will enter next week’s conference tournament as the number one seed.
Cory Jefferson added 25 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots for Baylor. Freshman center Isaiah Austin scored 11 points, to go with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Kansas was led by Ben McLemore, who went for 23 points, three rebounds and two assists. Elijah Johnson, was the only other Jayhawk to score in double figures wtih 10 points and four rebounds.
Baylor stole an early advantage blitzing to an 22-13 lead, at the 11:24 mark of the first half. The Jayhawks managed to cut the lead to three points, only to have Baylor once again build an nine-point halftime lead. The second half saw Baylor continue to build the lead at 61-44, just over ten minutes into the stanza. Kansas managed to score the next 11 points, trimming the lead to six at 61-55 with 6:27 left. Baylor finished the game on a 20-3 run the rest of the way, with Kansas failing to score another field goal.
The conference tournament begins on Wednesday with a double-header of West Virginia vs Texas Tech, and TCU taking on Texas. The winner of the Mountaineers and Red Raiders duel will face Kansas on Thursday.
