On Saturday afternoon, the fifth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks lost for the third straight game vs Oklahoma in Norman. The Sooners outlasted Kansas in a game that was in contention throughout. Romero Osby led the Sooners with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
With the win, Oklahoma improved to 15-7 overall, and 6-4 in Big 12 conference action. Kansas fell to 19-4 overall and 7-3 in conference. The Jayhawks previously lost to Oklahoma State and TCU in conference action. Freshman guard Ben McLemore led the Jayhawks in scoring with 15 points, three assists and three rebounds in the loss. Jeff Withey added 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
The game went back and forth in the first half, until the end when Oklahoma scored four straight points to push the lead to 38-30. Kansas instantly rallied back, trimming the margin in half at halftime, 38-34. The second half began much of the same until the Sooners went on a 10-2 run, putting the lead at nine, 57-48. Kansas once again battled back, cutting the lead to one after senior guard Travis Releford connected on a free throw, making it 60-59 with 3:49 left. Releford then missed a chance to tie the game on the second free throw attempt, opening the opportunity for Oklahoma to pull ahead. Kansas after an Elijah Johnson three-point field goal, cut the Sooner lead to three at 67-64. A few seconds later, McLemore cut the lead to two, but Je’Lon Hornbeak made two key free throws in preserving the win for Oklahoma.
Next up for Kansas is the Sunflower Showdown as Kansas State comes to Lawrence on Monday night. The game is scheduled for six p.m. and will be televised on ESPN. Kansas State took sole possession of first place in the Big 12 today after beating Iowa State, 79-70.
