On Tuesday night in Manhattan, the third-ranked Kansas Jayhawks held on to defeat the 11th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats, 59-55. With the win, Kansas is now 17-1 on the season and 5-0 in Big 12 conference play. Kansas State fell to 15-3 overall, and 4-1 in conference.
Travis Releford led the Jayhawks with 12 points, while Ben McLemore and Jeff Withey each added 11 points. Withey added 10 rebounds. Shane Southwell led Kansas State with 19 points, and Wildcats leading scorer Rodney McGruder was held to 13 points. Kansas State shot 35% for the game, and the visiting Jayhawks connected on 45% of their field goals.
Kansas jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the early after freshman Perry Ellis made a free throw at the 11:28 mark of the first half. Kansas State instantly came back, stealing the lead back on a Southwell three-pointer at 19-18. Kansas went into the locker-room holding onto a 31-27 lead.
The second half saw Kansas once again make a couple of eight point leads, only to have Kansas State rally each time. The Wildcats never held the lead in the second half, though cut the lead to three at 56-53 40 seconds remaining after Southwell made a field goal. Naadir Thorpe made two key free throws with 23 seconds remaining, cementing the win for Kansas.
Next up for Kansas is the Oklahoma Sooners. The game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. central time in Lawrence. Oklahoma 13-4 on the year after beating Texas, 73-67 on Monday night.
