The Kansas Lady Jayhawks improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play after defeating West Virginia, 60-59 Saturday evening. With the loss, West Virginia fell to 8-5 on the year and 0-2 in conference. Jayhawks forward Carolyn Davis connected on with a game winning lay-up with 42 seconds left.
Davis finished the game with 14 points. Jayhawks point guard Angel Goodrich scored 16 points and racked up six steals in the win. Goodrich, also made four assists and had three rebounds. Taylor Palmer led the Mountaineers with 24 points, and three rebounds in the loss.
West Virginia jumped to a 17-4 lead, seven minutes into the game. The Jayhawks quickly cut into that margin, tying the game up at 21 at the 5:21 mark in the first half. West Virginia managed to hold a one point lead at halftime, 31-30. In the second half, the two teams traded baskets until Kansas managed to hold a 39-35 at the 13:46 mark. West Virginia instantly battled back, grabbing a five-point lead at 44-39 after scoring nine straight points. After Davis connected on a free-throw, Kansas suddenly was back in charge at 55-54 with just a minute remaining in the contest. Averre Fields made two free throws to tie the game up at 56, before Davis made her game-winner.
Next up for Kansas is game with 13th-ranked Oklahoma State on Tuesday night in Stillwater.
