NCAA Basketball Rankings Update 12-31


For the third straight week, Duke stayed at the top of college basketball. The Blue Devils received all but two of the first place votes. The Michigan Wolverines out of the Big 10, snatched the other two votes.

The rest of the top six in the poll remained the same as last week. Arizona, Louisville, and Kansas all remained in spots 3-6 of the poll. Minnesota moved into the top 10, for the first time in 16 years at number nine. Right in front of the Golden Gophers is Syracuse, and Ohio State. Rounding out the top 10 is Gonzaga.

The New Mexico Lobos are the only team new to the rankings this week after defeating previously undefeated Cincinnati. The Bearcats fell from eight to 14 in the new poll, while Missouri who lost to UCLA dropped five spots out of the top 10 to 12. Illinois remained at 11, while Florida stayed put at 13. The rest of the top 20 is rounded out with Georgetown, Creighton, Butler, Michigan State, and San Diego State all ranked.

The remainder of the top 25, remained the same from a week ago with Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and Kansas State rounding out the poll.

Key games this week include:

A trio of games from today happened with ranked teams involved. The Golden Gophers remained unbeaten after defeating Michigan State, while the Bearcats got back on the winning track by knocking off Pittsburgh. Later tonight, Gonzaga faces Oklahoma State.

On Saturday conference play begins, with Ohio State facing Illinois, and Oklahoma State taking on Kansas State in important games.
