The Kansas Jayhawks took control of their game with American in the early going, en route to a 89-57 win on Saturday in Lawrence. American never stood a chance as Kansas was on fire from behind the three-point line.
Travis Releford led the Jayhawks with 19 points in the game. Fellow guard Elijah Johnson added 12 points. Freshman scoring leader Ben McLemore totaled just nine points. The Eagles were led by forward Stephen Lumpkins who scored 16 points, John Schoof added 14.
Kansas went on a 16-2 run to break a 7-7 tie in the early going. From there the lead only ballooned to 27 at halftime. In the second half, American started out okay, in narrowing the margin to 21 points, though this was short lived as Kansas instantly took control yet again. After Naadir Thorpe nailed a three-pointer, Kansas had a 84-44 lead.
For the game, Kansas shot 63% from the field, while American connected on 33% of their attempts. The Jayhawks hit 15-24 from behind the three-point line, including 5-6 from Releford, and Johnson’s 3-4. Kansas improved to 11-1 on the year, while American dropped to 4-9.
