On Friday night in Berkeley, the Cal Golden Bears defeated the Kansas Lady Jayhawks, 88-79. Layshia Clarendon led all scorers with 28 points for the Golden Bears who improved to 9-1 on the year. The eighth-ranked Golden Bears fought off a spirited effort by the 18th-ranked Jayhawks led by guard Angel Goodrich. The point guard totaled 21 points, five assists and three steals in the game.
Forward Gennifer Brandon added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Cal in the win. Kansas forward Carolyn Davis scored 16 points on 6-6 shooting in the loss.
After two made free-throws from Talia Caldwell, California vaulted to a 25-19 lead midway through the first half. Kansas managed to fight back, cutting the margin to one point. The home-team once again grabbed full control in pushing the lead to seven points at half-time in going on a 10-4 run.
Kansas managed to trim the lead to two points, on a couple different occasions in the second half, but got no further. Cal managed to keep this from happening.
Next up for Kansas is the start of Big 12 play and inter-state rival Kansas State on Jan. 2nd.
