Kansas Women’s Basketball: Jayhawks improve to 8-1 with win

The Kansas Lady Jayhawks defeated Newman College, 97-64 on Sunday afternoon in Lawrence. With the win, the 17th-ranked Jayhawks improve to 8-1 on the year.

Senior forward Carolyn Davis struggled in the Jayhawks loss to Arkansas on Thursday, though rebounded with a strong effort on Sunday. Davis finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and one assist. Chelsea Gardner came off the bench to add 17 points and nine rebounds. Angel Goodrich, finished the game 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Freshman guard Alexandra Ciabattoni led Newman with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Ciabattoni was 11-20 from the field, and 2-3 from behind the three-point line. No other Newman player finished in double digits scoring. Kansas jumped on Newman right from the start, enjoying a 51-31 lead at halftime. The second half was similar, as Kansas proved to be too much for Newman.

Kansas for the game, shot 55% from the field, while Newman finished with 40%. The Jets did connect on 50% of their three-point field goals, hitting 8-16 attempts.

Next up for Kansas is the Prairie View A&M Panthers from the SWAC. The Panthers are 2-4 overall on the season.
