Kansas Basketball: Southeast Missouri State Game Preview

The No. 7 Kansas Jayhawks will open up the 2012-2013 regular season against the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks. This game is apart of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic. Kansas is one of four host schools which includes: St. Louis, Texas A&M, and Washington State.

Southeast Missouri State is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference and finished 5th in the conference last season. They are located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri which is 395 miles from Allen Fieldhouse. Their overall record last season was 15-16.

Without a doubt, the Redhawks’ biggest player is junior forward Tyler Stone. Tyler Stone was Southeast Missouri State’s leading scorer (14.7 points per game) and leading rebounder (7.3 rebounds per game) a year ago. He is an OVC preseason all-league selection.

Other key Redhawk players include senior guards Marland Smith and Nick Niemczyk. Smith was second on the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game and Niemczyk was fourth on the team with 9.2 points per game. Just like Stone, Smith is also an OVC preseason all-league selection.

Junior transfer forward A.J. Jones will be a new to the Redhawks roster this season. In their exhibition game against Ouachita Baptist, Jones led the team with 18 points.

This game will be the first meeting between Kansas and Southeast Missouri State.

A good thing for the Jayhawks is that they are 18-0 against current members of the Ohio Valley Conference. One opponent from the OVC that has played Kansas a lot is Murray State and Kansas is 9-0 against them.

Overall, this game should not be a problem for the Kansas Jayhawks. This game is the definition of a “tune-up” game. Expect the Jayhawks to roll over the Redhawks and get their young talent some decent minutes.
