Last week, Rick Pitino signed a five-year contract extension with the Louisville Cardinals. He has a 274-106 record at the school.
According to ESPN, “his $3.9 million base salary remains the same, but he will earn a $600,000 retention bonus every other year from 2014 to 2022.”
This contract extension comes just months after the Kansas Jayhawks offered Bill Self an extension that would also keep him with the Jayhawks until 2022.
The Through the Phog staff discusses their thoughts on Pitino’s extension and asks if it is on the same level as the contract Bill Self received this offseason from Kansas?
George: The contract for Pitino is on the same level of the deal for Self. Both coaches are winners wherever they go and deserve to be paid like so.
Ricky: To me, this is the exact same contract as the Kansas Jayhawks offered Bill Self earlier this preseason. The main thing for me with each contract is the length of them. Both Self and Pitino will be with Kansas and Louisville until 2022. Both programs are winning programs the both teams understand why. Great coaches equal great programs.
