Kansas had two big conference games this week in volleyball action. The No. 20 Jayhawks played their second match against the West Virginia Mountaineers and then played on the road against the Baylor Bears.
Last Monday, Kansas swept West Virginia in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-12, 25-18. With this win, the Jayhawks tied the record for most home wins in a season. They are now 13-0 at Horejsi Family Athletics Center.
It was a near perfect night for Kansas’ senior middle blocker Tayler Tolefree. Tolefree hit 1.000 for the first time in Jayhawk volleyball history in the match against the Mountaineers and became just the third player in Big 12 history to record a 1.000 attack percentage.
According to kuathletics.com, head coach Ray Bechard said “Tayler (Tolefree) was great. We were in system and got her the ball. I think the rest over the last few days helped her more than anybody. She got her legs back, was pretty springy and making good connections with Erin (McNorton).”
On Saturday, Kansas lost only their third conference game of the season against the Baylor Bears. Baylor defeated No. 20 Kansas in four sets, 10-25, 25-27, 26-24, 23-25.
This was the first time all season that the Jayhawks lost a match to an opponent outside of the NCAA’s top-40 RPI.
Despite losing, Jarmoc had 15 kills with one error and Tolefree had 10 kills (her second straight match with 10 kills). Tiana Dockery and Sara McClinton also tried to help Kansas as they both had eight kills a piece.
On defense, Tolefree led the team with five blocks. Junior libero Brianne Riley and junior setter Erin McNorton also had good games defensively. Riley had a team-high 19 digs while McNorton recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 41 assists and 13 digs. She now moves into ninth all-time at Kansas in career assists with 1,243.
After this week, Kansas is now 20-5 overall and 8-3 in the Big 12.
The next match for the Jayhawks will be on November 7th against the Kansas State Wildcats. The game will take place in Manhattan, Kansas. In their last match, the Jayhawks defeated the Wildcats in four sets.
The Wildcats are 20-4 overall and 7-4 in the Big 12 this year.
