A look at Southeast Missouri State

After two exhibition games against Emporia State and Washburn, Kansas hosts Southeast Missouri State on November, 9th their first real non-conference game.

Southeast Missouri State finished with a record of 15-16 last season from the Ohio Valley Conference. This year’s squad is looking to improve upon this record and move up the standings in a wide open conference.

Three starters return for the Redhawks from last season. Forward Tyler Stone averaged 15 points and seven rebounds per game last year. The junior has the strength and talent to bang with Kansas forwards down low. Marland Smith also returns to the team. Last year, Smith averaged  12 points and three rebounds per game. Smith and Stone forged together a solid inside-outside duo. In addition to the two, senior Nick Niemczyk returns. Niemczyk averaged nine points last year.

The Redhawks added one junior college player who they hope can play right away in A.J. Jones. The forward is coming from Paris Junior College. Southeast Missouri State lost forward Leon Powell to graduation forcing a glaring hole down low, one they hope Jones can fill.
