West Virginia Tops Kansas 1-0

The 16th-ranked West Virginia Lady Mountaineers defeated Kansas, 1-0 Friday afternoon in Lawrence. West Virginia striker Kate Schwindel drilled in the only goal of the match in the 43rd minute.

West Virginia moved to 8-3-3 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 conference play. The Mountaineers are in first place of the Big 12, with Texas breathing down their necks at 3-0 in conference play. Kansas dropped to 8-4-1 and 2-2 in conference play after the loss. The lady Jayhawks are in a tie at fourth place with Texas Tech.

Schwindel’s goal was her eighth of the season so far. Kansas outshot West Virginia, 23-14, including 7-4 on the goal. Kansas had their chances for sure all throughout the match.

Amy Grow missed on two straight shots in the first half. Jamie Fletcher and Caroline Kastor both had numerous shots yet none found their mark. Finally, freshman Ashley Williams keyed a late effort that didn’t end in a goal. West Virginia goalie Sara Keene stayed strong throughout the match, making seven saves to key the win.

Kansas now travels to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to face 12th-ranked Wake Forest from the ACC on Sunday at 11:00 central time.
