For the first time in Big 12 Conference history, the Jayhawks earned both the offensive and defensive awards in the same week. Back-to-back Tournament MVP, Caroline Jarmoc, and digs leader, Brianne Riley, earned the honors. Jarmoc was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week while Riley was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.
According to kuathletics.com, head coach Ray Bechard had this to say about his players winning both awards…
“Honors like these are a direct reflection of your team’s performance. I think if you look at the history of how these awards are doled out, they signify good individual performances of which these two are very deserving. More importantly, I think they also signify a team that’s playing very well. I’m very excited that the Jayhawk volleyball program is being recognized.”
Both Jarmoc and Riley as well as the rest of the Jayhawks played phenomenally this past week. Kansas went a perfect 4-0 this week as they swept to win the Jayhawk Invitational this past weekend.
Jarmoc capped off what seemed like the perfect week with her second Tournament MVP of the season. She started her amazing offensive week with a .545 hitting percentage, 54 kills and an average of 5.04 points. Then, during the Jayhawk Invitational, she put up numbers which included: 38 kills and a .541 hitting percentage. Her best performance of the week came against Arizona State during the Jayhawk Invitational. In the match against the Sun Devils, Jarmoc recorded 14 kills and no errors on an efficient .824 attack percentage. Her efficient attack percentage in that game broke the Big 12 single-season record which was held by Kelsey Bryant of Texas A&M.
On the other hand, Riley recorded a total of 59 digs this past weekend which kept her on the top of the Big 12 digs leader board. Her digs total currently sits at 1,079 which placed her seventh on Kansas’ all-time list and first among Big 12 active players.
Kansas will travel to South Bend, Indiana this weekend for the Notre Dame Tournament. This will be the first time the Jayhawks will be playing on the road since their loss to Arkansas during the Arkansas Tournament. The other teams that will be playing in the Notre Dame Tournament include: Notre Dame, Xavier, and Loyola Marymount.
