Junior forward Caroline Kastor scored two goals as Kansas defeated NC State, 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Sport Complex. The win kept Kansas’s winning streak alive at six now. They are at 6-1-1 on the season, while NC State’s five-game winning streak ended.
Kansas midfielder Whitney Berry started the scoring at the 26-minute mark of the first half. NC State forward Brittany Stanko knotted the score at one, just before halftime. As the second half began, Kastor knocked in her first of two goals at the 47-minute mark, this was followed by another goal at the 49-minute mark by the forward. Kansas player Jamie Fletcher assisted on the first of the second half goals, while Berry was a part of the second. Stanko then added her second goal of the game at the 82-minute mark to cut the lead down to one goal. Kansas managed to hold on for the win in the end as NC State mounted several attacks though to no avail.
The Jayhawks totaled 17 shots, including 10 on goal. NC State countered with 13 shots, with only two on goal.
Kansas returns to action next Friday when they host Denver. Big 12 conference play begins on Sept. 21st as the Jayhawks host third-ranked Oklahoma State.
