Kansas Football: Pierson, Cox Nearly Hit 200 Yards

Rice defeated Kansas, 25-24 on a last-second field goal from Chris Boswell yesterday. The Jayhawks were in control most of the game until the end, with running backs Tony Pierson, and Taylor Cox leading the way.

Pierson totaled 120 rushing yards on 19 carries, good for a 6.3 yards per carry average. Cox backed up Pierson again with 79 yards on 15 carries. Last week in a game vs South Dakota State, both members of the duo topped the 100-yard mark. Even with the rushing game’s success, Kansas couldn’t finish off the Owls.

Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue passed for 236 yards and one interception. He led the Owls on a huge 93-yard drive late in the game cutting Kansas’s led to two points after a failed conversion. Running back Charles Ross added 94 yards on 14 carries. Jordan Taylor brought in nine receptions good for 101 yards and Vance McDonald made four catches for 72 yards in the win.

Kansas quarterback Dayne Crist completed 16-28 passes for 144 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown. Rice cornerback Bryce Callahan was a thorn in Crist’s side, making the two interceptions.

The kicking game was pivotal as Boswell hit on all four of his field goal attempts, and Kansas kicker Ron Doherty connected on one of three kicks. He missed a 53-yard field goal attempt midway in the third and a 40-yard kick early in the fourth quarter.
