Sasha Kaun going for a loose ball with Spain's Marc Gasol in pursuit on Saturday's game

Sasha Kaun and Russia win Group B in Olympics

Russia on Saturday defeated Spain, 77-74 to finish the preliminary round unbeaten at 4-0. With the win, Russia avoids USA until the gold medal contest if both teams make it that far.

Sasha Kaun, former center for Kansas from 2005-2008, played 13 minutes in the win over Spain, scoring one point and adding an assist. Kaun is the first former Kansas player to participate in the Summer Olympics basketball side of things since Danny Manning did in 1988, when USA won the bronze medal.

Russia finishes up group play on Monday vs Australia. If Russia falters in the game, they would tie with either Spain or Brazil who play on Monday. Russia earlier defeated both Spain and Brazil.

USA faces Argentina on Monday in a key matchup for Group A. The Americans are at the top of Group A with a 4-0 record, while Argentina featuring a roster full of NBA players including Manu Ginoboli, and Luis Scola are 3-1 overall in the group. Argentina last played on Saturday, defeating Nigeria, 93-79. USA edged Lithuania, 99-94. The Americans earlier defeated Nigeria, 156-73.
