Sasha Kaun and Russia improve to 3-0

Russia improved to 3-0 in group A of mens basketball at the Summer Olympics after a 75-74 victory over Brazil on Thursday. Vitaly Fridzon drilled a three-pointer in the final seconds, pushing the Russians to the amazing win.

Former Kansas Jayhawks center Sasha Kaun continues to be a huge part of the team. Kaun scored 13 points on Sunday when the team knocked off China, 73-54. He is the first former Jayhawk to play in the Olympics since Danny Manning participated in 1988.

Thursday’s game with Brazil went back in the forth in the fourth quarter after Russia blew an 11-point lead in the third. Brazil ran to a 72-67 lead with just over two minutes remaining, only for Russia and Alexy Shved to get going. Shved scored five straight points to tie the game with 26 seconds left. He finished with 17 points. Andri Kirilenko led the Russians with 19 points, while Leandro Barbosa scored 16 for Brazil.

Next up for Russia is Spain on Sunday and Australia on Monday, before the round of preliminary games end. The top four-teams from each group of six advance to the next round, that kicks off on August 8th.
