Kansas athletes at Olympic Trials

Today will be a big day for several Kansas track and field athletes as they compete for slots on the Olympic team in Eugene, Oregon.

Paris Daniels and Michael Stigler advanced to the semifinals of their respective events. Daniels will compete today in the 200m dash, while Stigler goes in the men’s 400m hurdles event. Daniels, advanced past the first round with a time of 23.17 in the 200. Stigler, just a freshman at Kansas, moved onto the semifinals with a  time of 50.02.

Andrea Geubelle will try and make the Olympic team in the second event of the long jump. Heather Bergmann’s time in Eugene gets under way in the javelin event. Rebeka Stowe competes in the 3,000 meter steeplechase final slated for later tonight.

Kansas has a couple of athletes fighting for spots on the swimming side, though their plights ended just short of making the team. Stephanie Payne, in the 200 fly, finished 87th out of 135 with a time of 2:18:38. Also competing was former Kansas swimmer Danielle Hermann, who finished just short of advancing past the first group of heats.
